12 Feb 12: Doubles A vs Freshford, Defeat 2-7

Against the top team in the division, Steve's A team have grabbed vital points to add to their season tally, losing 2-7 at home to Freshford. It is always a challenge coming up against Freshford, they never make things easy, but Steve and Dave proved their division 1 capability by keeping their opposition honest, taking victory in two of their three matches tonight. Thanks to Steve and Dave (2-1), Colin and Bill (0-3) and Antony with Ade (0-3). Captain Steve commented "Their reputation precedes them and our opposition tonight are often referred to as 'Thrashford' at our club, but Dave didn't read the script and we grabbed two valuable points. As strange a performance as I can remember, producing some dismal first ends, we eventually got rolling like an old train, remembering not to be over-awed and to give out incursions rather than take them. Some encouraging signs tonight and thanks to Ade and Antony for making the team complete."

3 Feb 12: Doubles A vs Phoenix A, Draw! 5-5

Following on from their crucial win last week, Steve's A team came away with a draw against Phoenix A team, sharing the spoils 5-5. With Phoenix having to field three teams on one night, two playing at home, their Men's A team were missing two regular players. It turned out to be an important encounter which Steve's A team almost fully capitalised on. Bit of a classic one under the circumstances - Colin fit, Dave in formidable serving form and Bill - running round, and round, and round! Thanks to Steve and Dave (2-0), Colin and Bill (2-1) and John H with Alex (0-3). Captain Steve commented "After a contentious week we have managed to chalk up a draw under trying circumstances, but I feel had time permitted we'd have come away with a win. Off we trooped to 'Trobo' to play Phoenix but the heating breakdown at their venue meant we had a rather frosty welcome: I asked for collective effort in the face of the adversity we encountered, and good grief, did I get it? Heroics from super subs and new pairing John and Alex meant their games wore down the time and energy of their opponents, tipping fortune in our favour. At four points each and one end each in the final pairing of the evening, the match ended even and there was no more time left to finish the decider bestowing the two points for a win between us. Memorable matches like this one make it all worthwhile for all of us who participate - my gratitude to you!"

24 Jan 12: Doubles A vs Bradford Penmoor, Win! 5-4

In a critical match for Corsham, Steve's Doubles A team have triumphed in tricky conditions against Bradford Penmoor, winning 5-4 away. Steve was happy to announce a win on the back of some changes within the team following Simon's withdrawal from badminton over the festive holiday. Thanks to Steve and Dave (2-1), Colin and Bill (2-1) and John O with Pete (1-2). Captain Steve commented "Although it's been well over a month since our last match together we have pulled off an important win over one of our rivals. It's true that Bradford Penmoor didn't have their best team out but they certainly had the home conditions in their favour as we grappled with some ferociously flighty shuttles, making the match a more even contest. We had selection concerns too, with Simon's new year decision to opt out of all remaining matches it meant drawing from the B squad. However, we have to ensure that we take maximum opportunity when matches like this arise and points are there for the taking: ahead of us lie some more daunting fixtures where our prospects will be limited.".

11 Dec 11: Doubles A vs White Horse, Win! 5-4

With a timely victory in their last match going into the holiday, Steve's A team have beaten White Horse 5-4 at home. With super sub Mitt (with a knee niggle) stepping in to cover for Bill, Steve returning from a knee injury now with a chest injury and Simon continuing to find his feet, the team needed a victory to carry them into the New Year. Pete and Simon grabbed two valuable points, with the opposition forcing a 3rd decider for both. Steve and Dave also took two points, but Steve chalked up losing in two to their opposite numbers to lack of match fitness on his behalf as he returns to full strength. Mitt and Colin took the winning point. Thanks to Steve and Dave (2-1), Simon and Pete (2-1) and Colin with Mitt (1-2). Captain Steve commented "Tonight White Horse inflicted some damage to our aspirations without actually managing to defeat us as we stumbled to a slender victory. We'd hoped for a greater margin at the beginning of the night but perhaps our preparations for this match weren't so favourable. Though I predict that we are still on a trajectory to accomplish our wish to finish above White Horse and Bradford Penmoor I know we can raise our game to higher standards that the remaining fixtures in 2012 will demand.". Mitt added "Colin and I still can't believe we lost two - it was so close to 7-2 (and should have been). Aaaaaaaaaah WTF! How did Colin and I lose our last game when were leading 11-4 in the decider at the change, then 17-12 before promptly not winning another single point to lose 17-21!". 9 Oct 11: Doubles A vs Chippenham 23, Defeat 9-0

Coming up against the top team in the division - the mighty 23 - Corsham Doubles A team were beaten 9-0. With super-substitute Mitt standing in for their injured captain, Steve, the battle lines were drawn. But Chippenham 23 proved to be the class act, soaking up any attack and responding with devastating effect when it was right. Thanks to Mitt and Dave (0-3), Simon and Pete (0-3) and Colin with Bill (0-3). Dave commented "I have to give it to Chippenham 23, they're a very strong team. I can see why they're doing so well this season (and long may it continue - anything to knock Freshford off the top spot). We tried our best but never came close to even worrying them. We struggled a little bit with the lights and shuttles but excuses won't help - we got our asses kicked! Although Mitt played on-par with them and showed us A-team players how it should be done. 50-shot rallies were killing me but he seemed to love them! Oh to be young again..."

9 Oct 11: Doubles A vs Bradford Penmoor, Win! 5-4

In their first outing of the season, Steve's Doubles A team have come away with a victory, beating Bradford Penmoor 5-4 at home. Most of the games were incredibly tight. Duane was limping from the very beginning, all because he played in the 3/3 for us on Friday. Penmoor had a young third pair who were easily dispatched by all our pairs but their top pair remained unbeaten, although Steve and Dave had a couple of match points against them and felt they should've taken the victory but they played well. Welcome back to Simon, it was his first match after a couple of years off following an injury and he did well. Simon and Pete beat Duane and partner in three and almost took an end off Penmoor's top pair. Colin's night was made when he and Bill took an end off Duane too. He was pretty chuffed! Thanks to Steve and Dave (2-1), Simon and Pete (2-1) and Colin with Bill (1-2). Captain Steve commented "A good way to start the season is with a victory, and we've done that. However, it was very close!"
