10 Jan 12: Doubles B vs Phoenix B, Win! 6-3
Grant's team were in strong form, despite fielding three super substitutes and have comfortably beaten Phoenix B 6-3 away. With team regulars Mitt, Matt M and John O AWOL (nobody quite knew what Miflin's excuse was), Grant's team arrived with only one regular B team pairing. Fate dealt Grant a helping hand, levelling the playing field somewhat as their opposition were down three of their regular players also. Thanks to a strong performance on Corsham's side, particularly Colin Thomas' debut for Corsham, they forced matches to three and snatched victory in 3rd end deciders. Grant's team came away with an a clean win in the end. Indeed, it was only slightly tired legs from deputy captain Matt L's marathon training that prevented the top pair of turning over their opposite numbers in a three game final match. 7-2 was going begging. Thanks to Grant and Matt L (2-1), John H and Chris (2-1) and Alex and Colin T (2-1). Captain Grant said "Good performance I thought tonight, Colin was brilliant and he and John H helped settle their younger partners' nerves. Thanks everybody, great games."
26 Jan 12: Doubles B vs Marshfield, Win! 7-2
Continuing a strong run of victories, Grant's B team have beaten Marshfield 7-2 away. With the full team back from their AWOL holiday, Grant's team took on a struggling Marshfield. It is a pretty good result and could have (should have) been 9-0. Mitt broke his personal record, twice - scoring 14 points on the trot from his serve then out doing that against Marshfield's 3rd pair with a 16-point winning streak. Thanks to John O and Chris (3-0), Mitt and Matt M (2-1) and Grant with Matt L (2-1). Captain Grant said "Well done to all for Thursday night, and also to Mitt for topping his personal record. The final score was 7-2 to us. Fantastic evening, top quote from Matt L at 15-19 down and 1-0 up in our last game - 'we don't want to take this to three!' Well done all again for some great play."
8 Jan 12: Doubles B vs Phoenix B, Win! 5-4
Kicking off the New Year in style, Grant's Doubles B team claimed a 5-4 victory over Phoenix B. With three team players absent without leave (aka gone on holiday), super-sub Ade stepped up and proving their might, Debbie and Anne paired up and gave the opposition a run for their money. With John O returning from injury having not played over the holiday deputy Captain Mitt mixed the pairs up to balance out the chances of taking points. It was the untried pairing of John O and Ade that clinched all three of their points, taking the deciding last game for a well deserved 5-4 victory, but lots of matches required a third game decider amplifying how hard the team worked for the win. Thanks to Mitt and Chris (2-1), John O and Ade (3-0) and Debbie and Anne (0-3). Captain Mitt commented "Nice to come away with a victory tonight. I shall be having words with the Captain about the timing of their jolly."
14 Dec 11: Doubles B vs Devizes, Defeat 4-5
In their last game before the festive break, Grant's B team were beaten at home by Devizes 4-5. Supersub Tim stood in for the injured John O and Mitt's knee injury also playing up meant the fight was on. Grant and Matt stepped up to claim two points but Miflin and Mitt took their opposite numbers to a 3rd end decider, but couldn't quite make it count. Thanks to Mitt and Matt M (1-2), Chris and Tim (1-2) and Grant and Matt L (2-1). Captain Grant's comments to follow "..."
16 Nov 11: Doubles B vs Aero, Win! 9-0
In their 3rd fixture in four days, Grant's team finished strongly with a 9-0 victory away against Aero. It was another away match, but thankfully not as far this time - playing at the Oak School in Melksham. Collecting all the points, Grant's team didn't even drop an end at all. Thanks to Mitt and Miflin (3-0), Chris and John O (3-0) and Grant with Matt L (3-0). John O added "With the team back to full strength it was nice to be back to winning ways with a resounding 9-0 win! Another friendly club and a very nice venue to play at. Thanks to everyone for their contribution this week, let's hope we don't have any more fixture congestion issues in future."
15 Nov 11: Doubles B vs Stonehenge, Defeat 4-5
Taking on newcomers Stonehenge on their own turf (miles away in Amesbury), Grant's team came very close, losing 4-5. It was a really great venue and an incredibly nice opposition too, it was also substitute Tim's first appearance for the B team this season. Thanks to Chris and John O (2-1), Mitt and Tim (1-2) and Grant with Matt L (1-2). Captain Grant said "A solid performance tonight against a team we expected to lose heavily to. Very strong debuyt by Tim, a big thank you to him for playing. A nice venue but it ain't half far! Let's see what we can do in the return match."
13 Nov 11: Doubles B vs Marshfield, Win! 6-3
Fixture number 3 for Grant's B team and they were gifted three points from their 2-pair Marshfield opposition, winning comfortably 6-3 at home. Marshfield turned up with only 3 players to start with, their 4th was almost an hour late! Mitt and Miflin took the honours winning all three, with Chris and John O beating their opposite numbers and narrowly losing to their top pair in a 3rd decider. Captain Grant and Matt battled as usual but couldn't force a 3rd decider - their usual territory for claiming victory - in either encounter. Thanks to Mitt and Matt M (3-0), Chris and John O (2-1) and Grant and Matt L (1-2). Captain Grant said "Well played all. A good start to our very busy week ahead - Stonehenge Tuesday followed by Aero on Wednesday."
25 Sept 11: Doubles B vs Doubles C, Win! 8-1
Last week's effort was carried over in the 2nd leg in inter-club rivalry, with Grant's team coming away one better with an 8-1 victory! Grant and Matt Littlechild were again out done by Antony and John H, meanwhile Mitt and Matt Miflin made short work winning all three points. Top pairing this week, Chris Dewing and John O'Connor, were untroubled until coming up against their opposite numbers, Antony and John H. Losing the first game then finding the next gear and winning with a comfortable margin the next two. Thanks to Chris D and John O'C (0-3) Mitt and Matt M (0-3) and Matt L with Grant (2-1). Captain Grant commented "Battling!" and his partner, Matt L said "I agreeā¦"
18 Sept 11: Doubles B vs Doubles C, Win! 7-2
With home advantage (though nobody brought the biscuits or refreshments), Grant's team got off to a strong start overcoming Frank's Doubles C team 7-2, though they were pushed! Grant and Matt Littlechild were understandably soft round the edges (Grant having just cycled over 400 miles - madness - to Paris and Matt having dashed the 180 miles back from Plymouth in his camper van to play) but made Frank's top two pairs work for the points. Mitt and Matt Miflin faired better score wise, but needed a 3rd end to settle matters against John H and Antony and were pushed very close to an upset by David and Tim, coming away with a sigh of relief 22-20 in the 1st end against that pairing. New combo Chris Dewing and John O'Connor proved a successful one, and were largely untroubled throughout the evening - one to watch methinks! Thanks to Mitt and Matt M (0-3), Chris D and John O'C (0-3) and Matt L with Grant (1-2). Captain Grant commented "We'll have 'em next week!"
