Corsham Badminton Club - History

2010/2011 Season:

In the 2010/2011 season, Corsham Badminton Club continued to field teams in both Doubles Division 1 and 2 as well as success with Mixed 4/2 and Mixed 3/3 teams.

Our Mixed 3/3 team's second season was well supported, but their only victory of the year whilst valid didn't contribute to their final points tally as the opposition in question (Bradford Penmoor) withdrew by the mid-way point (Christmas). Our Doubles A team had their strongest finish to a season yet, almost taking 3rd place after a very strong start. Our Doubles B team fought all the way and were the only team in contention to upset Marshfield's run for victory, but narrowly missed the opportunity and finished runner-up. Their challenge to White Horse who had finished 2nd from the bottom in Division 1 was a missed opportunity, but hopes are high for the next year. With sufficient numbers to play in teams, the club decided to put together a Doubles C team, and although it didn't chalk up a victory it came very close on more than two occasions and has high expectations for the next season.

The Mixed teams both came up against strong opposition, with the 3/3 taking on Division 1 teams and giving them a run for their money in some cases. The Mixed 4/2 team's progress was up and down this season, but strong performances and solid partnerships saw them rise to the occasion in the KO Cup and take the trophy - the only silverware Corsham picked up this year after becoming accustomed to doing so in the last three years.

  • Mixed 3/3 Captain - Clare Wilson
  • Mixed 4/2 Captain - Emma Rossiter/Steve Bird
  • Doubles A Captain - Steve Bird
  • Doubles B Captain - Mitt Rahman
  • Doubles C Captain - Frank Di Claudio
  • KO Cup Captain - Steve Bird

30 Mar 11: Mixed 3x3 vs Chippenham 23, Defeat 2-7

In their last fixture of the season, our Mixed 3x3 team were defeated 2-7 away at Chippenham 23. A fantastic couple of points from a very solid Chippenahm 23 team. Thanks to Clare and Grant (1-2), Lindsey and Matt L (0-3) with Belinda and John H (1-2). Captain Clare commented "They are a very solid team and having lost 0-9 at home to them at the beginning of the season, we weren't very hopeful! However, I think we gave them a good run for their money with Grant and I and John and Belinda managing to steal a game off them and gaining a couple of points, so well done everyone! Several of the other games were so close that they could have gone either way, but sadly, not our's in the end! Matt and Lindsey were so close to a win against one of the couples, only losing the third game by 19-21, which was such a shame. Thanks all! Congratulations to Chippenham 23 anyway and thanks for a great match, which we all thoroughly enjoyed (unlike some others which will remain nameless!)"

18 Mar 11: Mixed 3/3 vs Phoenix B, Defeat 2-7

For their penultimate fixture of this season, our Mixed 3/3 team were beaten by Phoenix B away 2-7. A good night of badminton all round. Some very close games to bring the 3/3 team's season almost to a close. Thanks to Lindsey and Mitt (1-2), Debbie and Chris (1-2) with Belinda and John H (0-3). Mitt commented "Lindsey and I took their top pair to a 3rd decider and only narrowly lost 21-23. Belinda and John were unlucky not to win any points after they got 18-21 twice in the first and 19-21 twice in another. Debbie and Chris had a strong night too with some great rallies." And Debbie added "Another night we could've had the 7-2 victory" but Chis then said "Yes, only if they were injured!". Thanks to all for their efforts.

27 Feb 11: Mixed 3x3 vs Freshford/St Georges, Defeat 0-9

In their last home fixture for this season, our 3/3 team were beaten by Freshford/St George 0-9. In a match that is a really tough game for any club, our 3/3 team put up a brave fight. Perhaps next time the opposition can bring some personality with them or at least a sense of humour. Well done to Ade and Belinda (0-3), Clare and Grant (0-3) and John Hirst and Muriel (0-3). Captain Clare commented "Thanks very much to all my team for turning up for the match against Freshford/St Georges. Not the most enjoyable experience, I have to say, and the 0-9 defeat was as expected! I know Grant and I took much pleasure from getting our score into double figures at the very least, it was just a shame that the opposition didn't seem to enjoy anything at all! But I guess it must get rather boring winning every match 9-0! John, who played his debut match for the 3/3 team, and Muriel got the prize for the highest score in our team taking one of the games to 19-21! Well done! Only two more matches to go this season so let's see if we can finish on a high with another win (or two!)."

8 Feb 11: Mixed 3/3 vs Bradford Penmoor, Win! 8-1

Our determined Mixed 3/3 team emerged victorious and can chalk up their first ever win as a team, beating Bradford Penmoor 8-1 away. A huge congratulations to our Mixed 3/3 team and a special thank you for their captain, Clare - jolly well done all and thoroughly deserved - made even more convincing playing in unfamiliar turf at Bradford Penmoor's home ground. Very well done to Dave and Debbie (3-0). Steve and Muriel (3-0) and Dan McLeod and Belinda (2-1). Captain Clare was delighted to say "Yay! Yippee! And three cheers for the Dream Team! WE'VE WON A MATCH FOR THE FIRST TIME THIS SEASON! Well done! What an emphatic victory over Bradford Penmoor this evening - 8-1! It probably had something to do with the fact that I wasn't playing but I am sure my role as Chief Cheerleader and Motivator made it all happen! I am very proud to have been a witness to the remarkable event with everyone giving their all and producing some excellent badders. And we got some good points for the match for a change. Let's hope the tide has started to turn and we can build on this in our next match against........Freshford/St. Georges! Well, let's keep practising anyway!"

30 Jan 11: 3/3 vs Phoenix A, Defeat 0-9

Our 3/3 team were beaten by Phoenix A 0-9 at home. With some new experimental partnerships, it all counts towards experience. Thanks to Chris and Belinda (0-3), Ade and Lindsey (0-3) and Phil and Clare (0-3). Captain Clare commented "Thanks to you all for turning up this evening! Unfortunately, we got the embarrassing result we expected so what more can I say? The opposition played the better game and we (as in Phil and I) certainly didn't help ourselves by making too many basic errors, but never mind! We have rarely played together and I guess this is where we fall down against other well established partnerships. But at least we could laugh about it! Better luck next time maybe?"

5 Dec 10: Mixed 3x3 vs Chippenham 23, Defeat 0-9

In a match that was a lot closer than the result suggests our Mixed 3/3 team lost 0-9 to Chippenham 23 at home. Thanks to Clare and Dan McL (0-3), Debbie and Matt (0-3) with Lindsey and Ade (0-3). Captain Clare commented "Thank you for trying so hard to win over Chippenham 23 this evening! Although we sadly lost 0-9, they by no means had it all their own way! Some of the games were incredibly close (21-23 for Daniel and I was truly nauseating - so close but so far away!) and with a little more luck it could have swung the other way. But alas it wasn't to be so we will just have to practise some more and get them back on their home turf in 2011!"

21 Nov 10: Mixed 3x3 vs Phoenix B, Defeat 3-6

Our Mixed 3/3 team lost 3-6 playing at home to Phoenix B. Everybody had fun and fought for every point earned. Thanks to Clare and Dan McL (1-2), Lindsey and Dave (1-2) with Belinda and Mitt (1-2). Captain Clare commented "The temperature outside was rapidly cooling down but it was hot stuff in the sports hall, as we worked so hard to keep up with Phoenix B. The games were pretty tight and we were unlucky not to win a couple more really but Phoenix were the better side at the end of the day. The positive thing to hold on to is we've definitely seen a big improvement on last year when most matches were a complete white-wash! At least, we're managing to pick up some points this year so well done everyone! Who knows what we will be achieving this time next year!!!

5 Nov 10: Mixed 3x3 vs Freshford/St. Georges, Defeat 0-9

Our Mixed 3x3 team lost 0-9 playing away to Freshford/St. Georges. Playing the division leaders is always difficult, especially at their venue. Thanks to Debbie and Steve (0-3), Lindsey and John O (0-3) with Muriel and Ade (0-3). Captain on the night, Steve, commented "No spoils to bring back from our bonfire night jaunt to Freshford/St. Georges I'm afraid, rather our ambitions were somewhat put to the torch! We scored an end but it was a frustrating night fighting the venue as much as the opposition, but all played with good spirit. Hopefully the Mens B Team can nail a victory back to the mast when they play on Sunday."

24 Oct 10: Mixed 3x3 vs Bradford Penmoor, Defeat 4-5

In their first home match of the season our Mixed 3x3 team lost 4-5 against Bradford Penmoor. Thanks to Clare and Grant (1-2), Belinda and Mitt (2-1) with Muriel and Chris D (1-2). Captain Clare commented "The final result was a 4-5 loss but funnily enough we did actually score 20 points more than Bradford Penmoor, which shows how close it was! There were some cracking rallies and some very good points won against a very good side so we should take heart from how close we got! Many thanks and congratulations to Mitt and Belinda, Chris D and Muriel, who was making her debut in the 3x3 team and Grant and Clare. We nearly did it! Let's get them next time!"

8 Oct 10: Mixed 3x3 vs Phoenix A, Defeat 2-7

In their first match of the season our Mixed 3x3 team lost 2-7 playing away against Phoenix A. Thanks to Clare and Dan Mc (0-3), Debbie and Steve (1-2) with Belinda and John O (1-2). Captain Clare commented "We put up an excellent fight against a strong Phoenix A team and gave them a good run for their money! Well done to Steve and Debbie and John and Belinda who did manage to steal a couple of points away from them, and Dan and I nearly managed it, taking one game through to the third but unfortunately let it slip through our fingers. Nonetheless, a positive start to the season so let's hope we can build on this result and gain a few more points than we did last season."

Mixed 4/2 Team:

Here are the home and away matches for Corsham Badminton Club Mixed 4/2 team for the 2010/2011 season. Our Mixed 4/2 Captain was Emma Rossiter.

Ser Date Vs. Home/Away Start Score Result
1. Fri, 15 Oct 10 Phoenix B Away 7:15pm 4-5 Loss
2. Sun, 10 Apr 11 Marshfield Home 7:30pm
3. Fri, 12 Nov 10 White Horse A Away 7pm 4-5 Loss
4. Sun, 28 Nov 10 White Horse B Home 7:30pm 8-1 Win
5. Sun, 23 Jan 11 Phoenix B Home 7.30pm 3-6 Loss
6. Thu, 10 Feb 11 Marshfield Away 7pm 8-1 Win
7. Sun, 20 Feb 11 White Horse A Home 7:30pm 6-3 Win
8. Fri, 4 Mar 11 White Horse B Away 7pm 9-0 Win

4 Mar 11: Mixed 4/2 vs White Horse B, Win! 9-0

In a strong final result giving the chance for a solid end to the season, our 4/2 team punished White Horse B 9-0 away. Desite playing at a venue not well liked by most, especially on an evening where the outside temperature of 1° is probably higher than inside! Building on this result with only one game outstanding, Marshfield at home, our 4/2 team look set to take 3rd place in Division 2 - perhaps even 2nd. Thanks to Belinda (3-0), Debbie (3-0), Steve (3-0), John O (3-0), Mitt (3-0) and Pete (3-0). Steve added "Friday night at Christie Chiller...don't you envy us? That said, there was a job to be done and we did it in style without dropping a single end. We tried some debut partnerships though but it didn't upset the outcome as we romped to 9-0 - all over and out by 9 o'clock. This result and recent emphatic wins in February have enlivened our 4/2 campaign in the 2010/11 season: good work!"

20 Feb 11: Mixed 4/2 vs White Horse A, Win! 6-3

In their second to last scheduled home fixture of the season, our Mixed 4/2 team continue to challenge the opposition this year and have beaten White Horse A 6-3 at home. With some crossed wires, the opposition turned up 15 minutes early but no advantage gained from mind games. After narrowly being defeated away, the team looked for home advantage and found their stride coming away with a solid 6-3 victory with everybody winning at least one point - well done. Thanks to Belinda (1-2), Debbie (2-1), Mitt (1-2), Pete (2-1), Chris (3-0) and Matt M (3-0). Mitt reported "A great result! Everyone played well, except for me perhaps. Miflin was on fire, especially in his mixed game. After a few losses early on in the season we've suddenly found our form. Thanks to all for giving it their all. I'm sure captain Emma will be proud."

10 Feb 11: Mixed 4/2 vs Marshfield, Win! 8-1

Equalling their best result of the season our Mixed 4/2 team beat Marshfield at Sheldon 8-1! A massive thank you to Marshfield who rescheduled this match after we had forgotten to turn up for it last week. Our team narrowly missed out on a clean sweep due to Steve having nothing left in his tank after a very busy week. Excellent performance and a big thank you to Lindsey (2-1), Clare (3-0), Dave (3-0), Steve (2-1), Chris (3-0) and Mitt (3-0). Mitt commented "That's got to put a smile back on Captain Emma's face! If it hadn't been Steve's third match and fourth time playing in five days I think we would've got the full 11 points. Everyone played very well. Actually, come to think of it, I think that was Dave's fifth night of badminton in five! What a machine! Although I think he was more of a spectator in Sunday's match. Chris and I hadn't played in a match together for a couple of years but still played very well together- like old times hey Chris? Congratulations to Clare and Lindsey for winning their ladies match, was a great watch. Thanks to all and I'm sorry for turning up so late."

23 Jan 11: Mixed 4/2 vs Phoenix B, Defeat 3-6

After a close game in 2010, narrowly missing out on victory away our Mixed 4/2 were looking to even the score, but were beaten by Phoenix B 3-6 at home.. Thanks to Clare (0-3), Lindsey (0-3), Dave (2-1), Pete (2-1), Chris (1-2) and Matt M (1-2). Captain Clare added "Well done everyone for last night's valiant effort to beat Phoenix B. As always, we put up a good fight but they were the stronger side with some very good County players who all seemed used to playing with each other. At least we took a few games off them which showed we weren't a complete pushover! Sorry, Emma - we tried our best! I enjoyed playing a 4/2 game and it made a nice change from my usual 3/3 set-up and it was good to play with different partners each time. Good luck in our next game."

28 Nov 10: Mixed 4/2 vs White Horse B, Win! 8-1

Our Mixed 4/2 team defeated White Horse B 8-1 at home. Thanks to Debbie (2-1), Lindsey (3-0), Mitt (3-0), Pete (2-1), Matt M (3-0) and Chris D (3-0). Substitute captain Mitt commented "Although I didn't play particularly well, I didn't even break a sweat. It's a shame Pete and Debbie lost a point, but their match went to three. It's also good to get a win on the board and some good points as well. Well done all, I'm sure Captain Emma will be proud of us."

12 Nov 10: Mixed 4/2 vs White Horse A, Defeat 4-5

In their second match of the season our Mixed 4/2 team lost 4-5 against White Horse A away at Crusty (sorry Christie) Miller. A difficult match for our team against a well organised side at a venue that's very tricky. Thanks to Emma (0-3), Debbie (1-2), Steve (2-1), Dave (3-0), Chris D (1-2) and Matt M (1-2). Captain Emma said "Thanks to Chris, Matt M, Steve, Dave and Debbie for turning up on a cold Novembery night at a cold drafty sports hall... and on a Friday!!! Now that's dedication. Thanks to you all for playing so well... we didn't win, but it was lots of fun!"

27 Oct 10: Match Postponed! Mixed 4/2 Team match at home against Marshfield scheduled for Sunday, 31 Oct 10 has been postponed.

Marshfield have postponed due to a lack of players. New date to be confirmed.

15 Oct 10: Mixed 4/2 vs Phoenix B, Defeat 4-5

In their very first match of the new season our mixed 4/2 team lost 4-5 against Phoenix B away. A well fought game for the opening match of the season coming down to 4-4 as the top mixed pairings battled for victory. Thanks to Emma (0-3), Pill (1-2), Steve (2-1), Dave (2-1), Colin (2-1) and Mitt (1-2). Captain Emma commented "We gathered in the car park in Corsham just as the Fair was attracting scantily clad teenagers... after a little tutting... we set off for Trowbridge. Just an ordinary Friday night you might think... but no... we were off for the first 4/2 match of the season. And what a lovely evening we had! Well done to Colin, Mitt, Steve, Dave and Pill who played spectacularly (less well done to me - who simply played). Phoenix were fab hosts for the evening... thank you for the delicious biscuits - it's hard to argue with a cow biscuit. After a long and enjoyable evening we came away a little fitter and a little wiser. Here's to some more great matches and of course... some future wins! Thank you massively to all who played and also thank you to the other lovely people who volunteered!"

Doubles A Team:

Here are the home and away matches for Corsham Badminton Club Doubles A team for 2010/2011 season. Our Doubles A team Captain was Steve Bird.

3. Fri, 18 Feb 11 White Horse Away 7pm 5-4 Win!

5. Wed, 1 Dec 10 Chippenham 23 Away 7pm 3-6 Loss
6. Sun, 30 Jan 11 Freshford/St. Georges Away 6pm 1-8 Loss
7. Sun, 6 Feb 11 White Horse Home 7:30pm 9-0 Win!
8. Fri, 25 Feb 11 Phoenix A Away 7:15pm 2-7 Loss
9. Sun, 20 Mar 11 Chippenham 23 Home 7:30pm 2-7 Loss
10. Sun, 27 Mar 11 Bradford Penmoor Home 7:30pm 9-0 Win!

27 Mar 11: Doubles A vs Bradford Penmoor, Win! 9-0

In their last match of the season our Doubles A team punished a youthful Bradford Penmoor side to a 9-0 thrashing at home. In what was a mere formality in the end our A team kept up the intensity and didn't let their game suffer in response to an under par Bradford side who will definitely be demoted to Division 2 next year. Thanks to Steve and Kev (3-0), Colin and Mitt (3-0) with Dan Mc and Grant (3-0). Captain Steve commented "Poor old Penmoor arrived under strength with some less than recognizable players against our changed but experienced ensemble. The result was a hefty win in our favour and a fine way to end the season in the mens league. It was pleasing to see no hint of complacency from us tonight and the points gained will give added respectability to our final position in the division: well played all!"

20 Mar 11: Doubles A vs Chippenham 23, Defeat 2-7

Our doubles A team were beaten by the confirmed runners up for this season, losing 2-7 to Chippenham 23 at home. In a typically dogged fashion, our Doubles A team have proven that we're capable of upsetting the big teams. Thanks to Steve and Kev (2-1), Colin and Bill (0-3) with Pete and Dan Mc (0-3). Captain Steve said "Well here's a score line that's becoming a pattern when we play one of the top two at home. It seemed a punishing encounter in the warm conditions, not to mention two tubes of shuttles similarly battered (sorry treasurer!), but we learned that we must make more of turning the close scores into points in our favour. Our opponents are not vastly superior to us and we should consider this next week in particular when Bradford Penmoor visit us for our last match of this season."

25 Feb 11: Doubles A vs Phoenix A, Defeat, 2-7

A loss to Phoenix A 2-7 away brings the tally for this season to four won and four lost with two remaining. After a triumph at the beginning of the season at home, our Doubles A team couldn't quite match that performance against Phoenix A on their home turf. All still to play for in the remaining fixtures as this result puts Phoenix A narrowly in front in 3rd place with a two point advantage over Corsham A in 4th. And with little chance of catching division leaders Freshford/St Georges and Chippenham 23 as well as having a comfortable cushion to 5th place White Horse, it comes down to the remaining two fixtures to redress the balance. Thanks to Steve and Kev (2-1), Bill and Colin (0-3) with Pete and John C (0-3). Captain Steve said "After a few consecutive victories we've come right back down to Earth with a bump tonight with a major reverse against Phoenix A and we were somewhat outshone by our very own mens 'C' team playing at the same time in another fixture on the courts next to us. It could be that we were rather inhibited by the effectiveness of Phoenix's tactics as the score line is perhaps disproportionate to the number of individual points we racked up. Still, your captain can make allowances for such occasions given our progress this season and we have two homes games left now to really prove our worth."

18 Feb 11: Doubles A vs White Horse, Win! 5-4

Our Doubles A team have chalked up another victory, defeating White Horse 5-4 away. In a match rescheduled from earlier in the season, the Doubles A team overcame selection issues at the last minute to walk away with a solid win in a venue not well liked by most clubs. Thanks to Steve and Kev (3-0), Colin and Bill (2-1) with Grant and Alex (0-3). Captain Steve commented "I'm relieved to report a tight victory over Westbury White Horse and how they made us fight to the very end for it. The fixture already had an ominous bearing on account of it being postponed in December, but today it got trickier when our untested third pairing had to be assembled 30 minutes before the start! Forebodings continued with missing racquets, lost phones and not to mention some lost tempers! I was ready to search for excuses linked to the recent incidence of solar activity, but no; Colin and Bill with the score tied at 4-4 and one all, valiantly defied the spirited resistance to clinch their final game and with it the match. Special thanks to them and to Grant and Alex for standing in so considerately."

6 Feb 11: Doubles A vs White Horse, Win! 9-0

Our doubles A team have thrashed White Horse 9-0 at home.. A useful full crop of points to add to the tally for this year. Thanks to Steve and Kev (3-0), Pete and John O (3-0) with Bill and Dave (3-0). Captain Emma's comments to follow "Tonight we have taken maximum points off Westbury White Horse in a match that carried more antagonism than the result suggests, since two of their former players selected tonight (Pete and John) transferred to us at Corsham - though I prefer to think of it as graduated! At times White Horse set out some challenges for us, but we kept up the belief that home advantage and practice bestows notching up our most resounding score line of the season so far. And thanks to Dave who stood in at the last minute - Division One isn't always a disheartening experience!"

28 Jan 11: Doubles A vs Freshford/St. Georges, Defeat 1-8

In a match against a team that regularly tops Division 1, it was some consolation our Doubles A team came away with one point against Freshford/St. Georges. They all count, and even a 1-8 defeat adds to the team's tally for the season so far and moves our A team further into a mid-table position - fighting with Phoenix A for third place. Thanks to Steve and Kev (1-2), Pete and Dan McC (0-3) with Bill and Alex (0-3). Captain Steve was delighted, saying "Hallelujah! This foul fixture is now behind us and we have rescued a point. Can you believe it's the first point we've taken away from this venue versus their top mens? Signs of improvement I think, if only slight, but especially as Alex made his Corsham debut (some baptism!) and all performed well in spite of the floor resembling an ice rink. Still, I suspect they refer to our place as the solarium!"

1 Dec 10: Doubles A vs Chippenham 23, Defeat 3-6

In a tough call to answer, our Doubles A team played for the second time in two days - this time coming away with a defeat but against a side that is challenging for the top spot this season in Division 1, losing 3-6 to Chippenham 23. Thanks to Steve and Dave (1-2), Colin and Bill (1-2) and Pete and Dan Mc (1-2). Captain Steve added "...carrying some fatigue and fearing a hiding we summoned the will to eke out three points from tonight's tough encounter. However, B team enthusiasts can rest assured that borrowed stand-in, Dave, finished the match in better condition and shape than his partner - I fear that I, your humble narrator, will be out of action for a week or so due to recent kayaking indulgences in a far-off land that have scuppered my power shots!"

30 Nov 10: Doubles A vs Bradford Penmoor, Win! 8-1

In a very strong showing our Doubles A team beat Bradford Penmoor 8-1 away. Bradford used a ladies level-partnership, first time we've seen that this season. An excellent start to a busy week for the club with 5 matches over 6 days! Thanks to Steve and Kev (3-0), Colin and Bill (3-0) and Pete and Dan Mc (2-1). Captain Steve's commented "I'm thrilled to report a decisive win over Bradford Penmoor. Though they were depleted we performed well in fridged temperatures. Our opposition in tomorrow's match may prove more fiery!"

17 Oct 10: Doubles A vs Phoenix A, Win! 5-4

In their second match of the season our Doubles A team beat Phoenix A 5-4 at home. A close match that went down to the wire in the very last game of the night with Pete and Dan Mc clinching their deciding game against Dan J and Ed. Thanks to Steve and Kev (3-0), Colin and Mitt (1-2) and Pete and Dan Mc (1-2). Captain Steve commented "It's always good to announce a victory, especially in Division One but tonight we gave a solid and tactically astute performance over one of our rivals in the league. Time was nearly up and the score was tied at 4-4 so my commendations to Pete and Dan McLeod for showing muturity to clinch the match right at the very end!"

26 Sep 10: Doubles A vs Freshford/St. Georges, Defeat 2-7

In the very first match of this 2010/11 season our Doubles A team lost their home match against Freshford/St. Georges 2-7. A tough team to face for the opening match of the season but a strong start nonetheless. Thanks to Steve and Kev (2-1), Colin and Bill (0-3) with Pete and John O (0-3). Captain Steve commented "Tonight we produced our best ever league result against Freshford/St. Georges who put out a strong side, no doubt hoping for a 9-0 whitewash - but we wouldn't let them have it. This showing was a positive start to our 2010/11 campaign and given the effort that was expened by all (and our new pair Pete and John were not over-awed), I'm confident that we can secure further vital points in the months to come."

13 May 11: Doubles B vs. White Horse A Defeat, 3-6

In the final match of the season, our Doubles B team came very close to an upset but were beaten away 3-6 by White Horse A. Mitt's team were in high spirits this week with the anticipation of reaching Division 1 by beating White Horse in a challenge match, in turn relegating them into Division 2. White Horse A may have finished in the challenge position from the Division above, but they are by no means a push over but given Mitt's mood after the match it could have so easily been utterly different! Thanks to Mitt and Dave (2-1), Chris and Miflin (0-3) with Matt L and Grant (1-2). "Grant and Matt chalked up one point and came so very close to taking another losing out 20-22 in the 3rd. We played okay, but they had Home advantage and we don't have a strong track record playing at Christie Miller. So, Division 2 next year then - well done and a huge thank you to all for a strong performance this year."

3 Apr 11: Doubles B vs Marshfield, Defeat 3-6

In their final fixture of the season and their most important one to date our Doubles B team were beaten by their closest rivals in division 2, Marshfield, 3-6 at home. In true showdown fashion nerves were frayed and the scene was set for a very tight match. Our B team needed a 6-3 win to top the division but a very consistent Marshfield side kept them at bay. Thanks to Mitt and Dave (3-0), Chris and Matt M (0-3) with Grant and Matt L (0-3). Captain Mitt commented on the last match of the season "Well I'm a bit shocked to be honest. We lost to them 4-5 away so thought we'd at least win tonight and fight for the magic 6 we needed. Home advantage didn't help us at all tonight. Dave and I didn't really have much of an issue dispatching all 3 of their pairs but the rest of the team did. They couldn't hold up to Marshfield's brutal attacking game. Thanks team for a very entertaining season and thank you to our supporters who turned up to cheer us on- hope you saw some good badminton."

28 Jan 11: Doubles B vs Devizes, Defeat 4-5

At a crucial point in the season and with key regulars unavailable, our Doubles B team salvaged four points from their away leg against an in-form Devizes. Devizes is a side that has shown it is more than capable this year but eyes are now on Marshfield's performances in their remaining three fixtures before facing our B team in their final match at the beginning of March - it really is a close competition. Thanks to Dave and Mitt (2-1), Chris and Matt M (2-1) with Ade and John H (0-3). Captain Mitt commented "Didn't expect that! We beat them 9-0 at home so I was hoping for at least 7 points away. They played very well, a young team that will be a major force in future seasons. Saying that however, things didn't go our way. The venue, which myself and Miflin were new to, was different (cosy). It was tiny with no run-off area around the 2 courts, the floor was very dusty and the ceiling was very low with more things hanging down than at a 6 year old's birthday party! It wasn't our night, probably the worst case of bad luck I've seen in a match yet. To top it off they play with duck feather shuttles which tended to disintegrate after a couple of shots. Ade and John (substituting for Matt and Grant) were the unluckiest pair, they came so close to winning 2 matches it was almost unbelievable! Really felt for Ade- Why didn't you change the shuttle?!?! Our second pair played well, Chris' serves were almost perfect all night but Miflin's game took a massive hit because of the low ceiling, it didn't suit his style of play at all. Dave and I played below par, mainly due to my inability to serve. All went a bit pear shaped for me after I had a dangerous slip and lost all confidence in the halls grip level. Or maybe my bad day started hours earlier when I couldn't eat or drink for 6 hours prior to my ultrasound scan. Well done team, we did well considering."

16 Jan 11: Doubles B vs Doubles C, Win! 9-0

For their first fixture of 2011, our Doubles B team came away with a clean sweep victory against our Doubles C team, though the score line doesn't reflect how close it was to being a repeat of the season-opener (7-2). Some great badminton all round - the inter club battles produce a different determination in every player. Thanks to Mitt and Dave (3-0), Chris and Matt M (3-0) with Grant and Matt L (3-0). Captain Mitt finally commented "9-0. Exactly what the doctor ordered. Well done team. Job done."

12 Dec 10: Doubles B vs Devizes, Win! 9-0

In their and the club's final fixture of 2010, our Doubles B team scored a 9-0 victory over Devizes at home. With one game in-hand over Corsham, Marshfield sit comfortably in second with our Doubles B team topping the division (on paper) over the festive break. Whilst still to play Devizes at their home ground, this season's main protagonists - Marshfield - only won 7-2, albeit not on their home turf. Tonight's win recovers ground lost following the 7-2 win over Phoenix B in November as a result. It is so close that at this point we need to beat Marshfield at our home ground next year and recover the two points our Doubles C team fought for and won at the season opener in October to be in with a fighting chance of promotion! Thanks to Mitt and Dave (3-0), Chris and Matt M (3-0) with Grant and Matt L (3-0). Captain Mitt commented "We won 9-0! What a great way to end the year for the club and the team! We all played very well, they were consistent but we had them covered. There's a lot of matches left to play this season, but more of tonight's display and we'll give Marshfield a run for their money! Well done team!"

2 Dec 10: Doubles B vs Marshfield, Defeat 4-5

In a fixture that promised to be a close call, our Doubles B team played their closest rivals, Marshfield away at Sheldon school putting up a courageous effort and narrowly losing 4-5, their first loss of the season. Thanks to Mitt and Dave (2-1), Matt L and Grant (1-2) and Matt M and Chris (1-2). Captain Mitt's feelings "Marshfield have a very young team and Tom in particular played very well, we couldn't beat him! A 4-5 defeat puts them top of the division by one point so all to play for in our remaining matches. Well done team and a big thank you to Chris for playing even after falling over 5 times in the icy conditions and injuring himself quite badly. We'll beat them when we play at home next year."

26 Nov 10: Doubles B vs. Phoenix B, Win! 7-2

Seeking revenge for the defeat handed out to our Doubles C team, the B team were given three points against a two-pair opposition before starting and crossed the line for a 7-2 victory against Phoenix B away. Thanks to Dave and Mitt (2-0), Matt M and Chris D (2-0) with Grant and Matt L (0-2). Captain Mitt said "Dave and I along with Miflin and Chris comfortably won our two matches but unfortunately Grant and Matt couldn't quite make it a clean-sweep. Well done to all and special thanks to Matt for getting us there safely in what were difficult driving conditions. Another consistent seven points to add to our tally for this season - a good result that puts us top of the division!"

7 Nov 10: Doubles B vs Phoenix B, Win! 7-2

In their first home match of the season our Doubles B team beat Phoenix B 7-2. Nice to report a victory after a tough week for the club. Thanks to Mitt and Dave (3-0), Matt M and Chris D (2-1) with Grant and Matt L (2-1). Captain Mitt commented "We had an interesting night, Dave and I didn't play our best and yet won all our games, whilst Grant and Matt played very well but were unlucky to lose one. Chris and Miflin gave it their all, so much so that Chris was bleeding by the end of the night! Always happy to beat Phoenix, especially when we'll be seeing a lot more of them over the next few weeks."

10 Oct 10: Doubles B vs Doubles C, Win! 7-2

In their first match of the season our Doubles B team beat our very own brand new Doubles C team away 7-2. Thanks to Mitt and Dave (3-0), Grant and Matt L (2-1) with Matt M and Dan Mc (2-1). Captain Mitt commented "Well done to Frank's C team for playing so well, it's difficult playing against friends who you play with week in week out. This was made even more difficult for us as Chris is a B team player and only played for the C team due to a lack of available players. This made the match feel like a normal club night and required some extra concentration to forget who our opponents were and push for the win. A fun fixture to start off the new season with some close games. Thanks team, a strong start to the season and to my first year as Captain."

Doubles C Team:

Here are the home and away matches for Corsham Badminton Club Doubles C team for 2010/2011 season. Our Doubles C team Captain was Frank Di Claudio.

13 Mar 11: Doubles C vs Devizes, Defeat 2-7

In their last fixture of their first season, our Doubles C team were defeated 2-7 at home by Devizes. Captain Frank rallied his troops for one final battle to round off a successful inaugural season in Division 2. Whilst not chalking up a victory tonight, the team can all take heart that they played well and came bloody close to snatching more points. Thanks to John H and Antony (2-1), Phil and Alex (0-3) and Frank and Ade (0-3). Captain Frank's comments and season round up to follow ...

25 Feb 11: Doubles C vs Phoenix B, Defeat, 4-5

In an incredibly close finish that would have been their first victory this season, our Doubles C team narrowly missed out on taking the hounours losing 4-5 to Phoenix B away. It was such as close match with Corsham C drawing first blood, soon followed by Phoenix B responding and the teams continued to exchange points resulting in the top pairs from each team facing off with the score tied at 4-4. Decisively taking the first end 21-12, Antony and John H saw Phoenix B take the second (only just) 19-21 meaning a third end decider was required for the point and the match! With both teams watching after a delayed start to the evening the pressure was on and Antony and John H were never more then two points adrift or in front, but eventually succumbed losing 19-21 fighting all the way. Thanks to Antony and John H (2-1), Phil and Alex (2-1) with Ade and Frank (0-3). As usual Captain Frank's comments were short, he said immediately afterwards "Well done all, another close result but still not the right one. Bugger."

13 Feb 11: Doubles C vs Marshfield, Defeat 1-8

Our Doubles C team were beaten 1-8 at home by Marshfield. Marshfield are the only other team realistically in the hunt to be crowned division 2 winners and with their form recently, a strong performance by our Doubles C team snatched a point. This also helps our Doubles B team remain the only team to challenge Marshfield this season. Well done fellas! Thanks to Frank and Ade (0-3), Antony and John H (0-3) and Phil and Alex (1-2). Captain Frank commented (albeit briefly) "Marshfield put out a strong team again but thanks to Phil and Alex we only lost 1-8 ;-("

16 Jan 11: Doubles C vs Doubles B, Defeat 0-9

Once again our courageous C team rose to the challenge of playing our club's Doubles B team and in their first fixture of the New Year. Sadly the B team proved too strong and Frank's dream wasn't to be, losing 0-9. Having seen Chris D become a permanent member of the B team, Captain Frank fielded a strong side and looked to better the two points from the opening match last year. This time round there were again some very close games, with the top pair of Antony and John H pushing the B team's top pair to a 3rd game decider in the final match of the evening plus Frank and Phil deservedly won an end against the B team's 2nd pair. Thanks to Antony and John H (0-3), Ade and Rich (0-3) with Frank and Phil (0-3). Captain Frank's first comments were unrepeatable here, but he did say "A huge thanks to my team who played really well. I'm really impressed with the badminton played but whilst we played well, the B team played just that bit better. Well done to all."

3 Dec 10: Doubles C vs Devizes, Defeat 4-5

Our valiant C team travelled to meet Devizes in their last match of 2010 and although didn't come away with a victory, a 4-5 defeat was close against a team that lost 2-7 to current division table-toppers - Marshfield - their performance is steadily improving and a win is surely on the cards in the New year! Well done Frank-baby! Thanks to Frank and Phil (0-3), Antony and John H (2-1) with Ade and Rich (2-1). Captain Frank's comments to follow...

14 Nov 10: Doubles C vs Phoenix B, Defeat 0-9

The Doubles C team lost 0-9 playing at home to Phoenix B. The same Phoenix team that lost last week to our B Team had a point to prove. Thanks to Frank and John H (0-3), Antony and Ade (0-3) with Phil and Chris D (0-3). Captain Frank said "We were simply beaten by a better side. We'll learn from our experience and do better next time. We haven't found our match form yet and need to practice on playing under pressure."

4 Nov 10: Doubles C vs Marshfield, Defeat 0-9

Our Doubles C team lost 0-9 playing away to Marshfield. The young Marshfield team only gave away 2 ends! Thanks to Frank and John H (0-3), Antony and Ade (0-3) with Phil and Chris D (0-3). Captain Frank commented "Victorious in our defeat! The scoreline doesn't tell the whole story, we were very close to taking points off them. They have some very strong young players and we tried our best. Everyone had good fun and the games were very enjoyable (although Chris didn't see the shuttle much)."

10 Oct 10: Doubles C vs Doubles B, Defeat 2-7

Our brand new Doubles C team captained by Frank played their first ever match against our very own Doubles B team. Frank's team lost what was their home fixture 2-7 against the Doubles B team. Thanks to Frank and John H (0-3), Antony and Chris D (1-2) with Rich and Phil (1-2). Captain Frank commented "Very dissappointed! We all played badly. I never wanted to be Captain and I'm not happy! Just joking, I was impressed with the way we all played, it was the C team's first match ever and I'm looking forward to our future games. Thanks to everyone for their hard work and especially to Chris for stepping in because Ade couldn't make it. Well done for lowering yourself to our level."

Mid-Wilts KO Cup:

Here are the home and away matches for Corsham Badminton Club Mixed 4/2 team in the Mid-Wilts Knock Out Cup in Mid-Wilts. Our KO Cup Captain was Steve Bird.

4 Apr 11: KO Cup Final VICTORY over Freshford/St. Georges A! Win! 308-284

WE'VE WON! Our KO Cup team beat Freshford/St. Georges A away at Stonar! After an impressive victory over Calne in the Semi-Final only last Thursday our Cup team continued their impressive cup form to clinch an historic victory over Thrashford (who were 45 minutes late!) by 24 points. With a 125 point advantage our mixed team had to try and get about 14/15 points in every game- a job made somewhat difficult when playing the division leaders! Some great play all round to bring the Cup home. A massive thank you to Debbie, Lindsey, Steve, Kev, Dave and Mitt. Captain Steve commented on a great final "WE HAVE WON THE CUP!! I don't know what to say really (makes a change, I know!). It's hardly the time for modesty: what a superb display from everyone. Tonight we did the simple things so well, like turn up at the correct venue; can you believe Freshford/St. Georges went to Christie Miller by mistake? Maybe it was a ruse or nerves, but if it was it didn't faze us once they did arrive as we threw down a cunning and determined effort. And to think you have made history by having participated in Corsham's first cup final victory in the senior doubles! Now we really have something to celebrate at the Mid-Wilts presentation evening." Mitt added "Two very important matches in two nights! What were Dave and I thinking?! Great to have something to celebrate at the end of a very enjoyable and exciting season. I thought Dave 'The Machine' Di Claudio was the only CBC member who loved the punishment of playing a lot of matches in quick succession but it turns out I was wrong. Lindsey 'Superwoman' Ritson likes to do the same! Four matches in just six days is quite the impressive stat, well done Lindsey!"

31 Mar 11: KO Cup Semi-Final vs Calne, Win! 370-257

In another hastily arranged match, our 4/2 team played their semi-final cup tie at Calne. With a +55 point advantage they knew they had to be consistent and not let Calne run away with the games. Little did our team know that the handicap was unnecessary as we romped to a 58 point victory anyway (113 on paper)! Thanks to Debbie, Lindsey, Steve, Kev, Dave and Mitt. Captain Steve commented "Great news - we're through to the final of the Mid-Wilts Knock Out Cup! This really was an assertive performance tonight and we've now bagged three away victories on our travels in this competition. Calne have had their problems with player availability recently and we sure gave them another one to think about! This will be our second final in this competition and proves that reaching the first one was no fluke: we're stronger now, we know what's achievable if we get our game together and we know exactly what to expect from Freshford/St. Georges 'A'...no sniggering, now!"

31 Jan 11: KO Cup ¼-Final vs Chippenham 23 B, Win! 418-332

Our embattled KO Cup team have reached the semi-finals of this season's Knock Out Cup after beating Chippenham 23 B away. With +35 and +45 handicap respectively, the team overcame their -10 disadvantage to win by some margin. We will be playing the winners of Calne A vs Bradford Penmoor A. Thanks to Debbie, Lindsey, Steve, Kev, Dave and Mitt. Captain Steve was delighted, saying "It's good to report a victory for Corsham again after a tough set of recent fixtures: tonight we have defeated Chippenham 23 B in the ¼-finals of the KO Cup and we go through to the semi-finals. It was a scrappy performance and at times we were up against some farcical conditions such as lights going out mid rally and also a fan heater which resembled the jet stream in intensity down one side of the hall; to a fashion this was then covered by a portable door that was rustled up from somewhere and play went on. Still, we weren't unduly troubled in any of our pairings and performed convincingly throughout to win quite resoundingly. My thanks to all, especially Mitt who gave a mature performance just days after returning from injury."

10 Dec 10: KO Cup vs White Horse, Win! 390-378

In a hastily arranged match, our 4/2 team travelled unexpectedly to away turf for our cup tie against White Horse. It was a tall ask to overcome an opposition with a +25 point advantage, but we prevailed winning by 12 points! Thanks to Debbie, Lindsey, Steve, Kev, Pete and Mitt. Captain Steve commented "I'm delighted to report victory over White Horse in the KO Cup, particularly after taking the gamble of relinquishing home advantage in order to meet the time constraints of the competition. We chipped away at White Horse's 25 point superiority in a performance of guile and determination in which Lindsey proved to be in fine form. Trying circumstances of a chilly venue - just 7° celsius read the hall's thermometer - made moving the shuttle around a real slog but we prevailed for each encounter and the win is all the sweeter for being such a great team effort."
