24 Jan 12: Doubles A vs Bradford Penmoor, Win! 5-4
In a critical match for Corsham, Steve's Doubles A team have triumphed in tricky conditions against Bradford Penmoor, winning 5-4 away. Steve was happy to announce a win on the back of some changes within the team following Simon's withdrawal from badminton over the festive holiday. Thanks to Steve and Dave (2-1), Colin and Bill (2-1) and John O with Pete (1-2). Captain Steve commented "Although it's been well over a month since our last match together we have pulled off an important win over one of our rivals. It's true that Bradford Penmoor didn't have their best team out but they certainly had the home conditions in their favour as we grappled with some ferociously flighty shuttles, making the match a more even contest. We had selection concerns too, with Simon's new year decision to opt out of all remaining matches it meant drawing from the B squad. However, we have to ensure that we take maximum opportunity when matches like this arise and points are there for the taking: ahead of us lie some more daunting fixtures where our prospects will be limited.". With Bill and Steve as well as Mitt and Tim dropping points against their opposition's top pair, the ladies more than recovered the lost ground to claim victory. Thanks to Belinda (3-0), Debbie (3-0), Steve (2-1), Bill (2-1), Mitt (2-1) and Tim (2-1). Belinda's comments coming soon "". For previous results, visit the Mixed 4/2 section.
15 Jan 12: KO Cup vs Bradford Penmoor, Defeat 329-366
A +25 advantage over their opponents, our KO Cup team were unceremoniously dumped out of the competition by Bradford Penmoor. With total points the objective rather than individual game wins, it was fairly evenly matched in the mens doubles. Our ladies pairing battled bravely, but Bradford Penmoor proved they have a strong ladies line up this year beating Debbie and Belinda to single digits in both games. With both Mitt and Steve still finding form in the New Year after recovering from injuries, the team took heart from keeping the score line close and pushing all the way. Thanks to Debbie, Belinda, Steve, Dave, Mitt and Pete. Mitt commented "Well Penmoor knocked out the holders. We only had +25 points on a Division 1 mixed team. It was good to beat some of their more established pairings." For previous results, visit the KO Cup section.
8 Jan 12: Doubles B vs Phoenix B, Win! 5-4
Kicking off the New Year in style, Grant's Doubles B team claimed a 5-4 victory over Phoenix B. With three team players absent without leave (aka gone on holiday), super-sub Ade stepped up and proving their might, Debbie and Anne paired up and gave the opposition a run for their money. With John O returning from injury having not played over the holiday deputy Captain Mitt mixed the pairs up to balance out the chances of taking points. It was the untried pairing of John O and Ade that clinched all three of their points, taking the deciding last game for a well deserved 5-4 victory, but lots of matches required a third game decider amplifying how hard the team worked for the win. Thanks to Mitt and Chris (2-1), John O and Ade (3-0) and Debbie and Anne (0-3). Captain Mitt commented "Nice to come away with a victory tonight. I shall be having words with the Captain about the timing of their jolly." For previous results, visit the Doubles B section.
2 Nov 11: Mixed 3/3 vs Freshford/St. Georges, Defeat 0-9
Against the strongest club in Mid-Wilts, Clare's 3/3 team enjoyed themselves but had to cope with limited courts and long waits between games to lose 0-9 away to Freshford/St. Georges. The games actually looked a lot closer than the 0-9 defeat suggests with us getting high points on many of the games but alas, it was not meant to be! Many thanks to everyone who played and tried so hard to steal a game: Belinda and Dave (0-3), Ann and Mitt (0-3) and Clare with Grant (0-3). Captain Clare commented "After surviving a near-death experience with Dave at the wheel on the way to the match, we unfortunately then got annihilated by Thrashford! Oh well, onwards and upwards! Let's hope we can get a closer match with Chippenham 23 at home in a couple of weeks." For previous results, visit the Mixed 3/3 section.
