18 Jul 10: Results of the 2010 CBC Doubles Tournament: Steve Bird and Chris Askin win!
The inaugural CBC Doubles Tournament was very well supported with 24 members entering and was won by Steve Bird and Chris Askin. As the pairings were randomly picked a number of partnerships immediately stood out to have a strong chance of victory. The pairs as they were picked were as follows:
Dave/Grant, Mitt/Antony, Muriel/Jules, Lindsey/Colin, Steve/Chris A, Pill/Matt, Debbie/Pete, Kev/Ade, Tom/John, Matt M/Bryn, Chris D/Rich and Dan J/Bill.
After some very close group stage matches as shown in the Results Table it was Steve/Chris A and Matt M/Bryn who came top of their groups. Runners-up of the 2 groups were Mitt/Antony and Debbie/Pete. Group B looked to be the most competitive with just 6 points covering 2nd, 3rd and 4th places! Both Semi Finals were close but one in particular was very close. Mitt/Antony beat Matt M/Bryn to 20 in a game that could easily have gone either way! In the other Semi, Steve/Chris A beat Debbie/Pete to 13 after they became stuck on 12 for a lot of points. This brought up a Final match that had already been played. In the group stages Steve/Chris A beat Mitt/Antony to 15 so their confidence was high but could Mitt/Antony change their tactics? A very nervous Final ensued with both pairs playing a very strategic game. Steve's high serves went unanswered as Mitt/Antony fell behind, but they didn't give up and clawed back at the very end to lose a very close Final to 19.
Thanks to all who took part in what was a very fun and exciting tournament. It looks like we raised about £30+ for the club's funds and with the trophies bought that should be closer to £60 next year! A special thank you to Tom for stepping in last minute after Belinda fell ill. Tournament photos to follow...

26 Apr 10: Mid-Wilts AGM News
Headlines from the 2010 Mid-Wilts AGM are the success of the leagues in general, successful end-of-season tournaments and finally changes to the leagues for next year. With a good turnout from all clubs in Mid-Wilts, all leagues recorded their highest levels of full teams playing for some time whilst on a interdistrict level Mid-Wilts players have had a successful year. The end-of-season Mid-Wilts Amercian Tournament was also very well supported with 29 pairs participating. Unsolicited good feedback on organisation, venue (Corsham Springfield) and most importantly of all - the games - has been glowing. There are two changes for the next match season beginning in October. Firstly, the Men's Doubles division 1 and 2 will become a Doubles league opening the opportunity for ladies pairs to make up any or all 3 pairs in any team from any club! Great news. Secondly, the top two clubs from division 1 will be invited to a county league starting-up for the 2011/2012 season. This will be in addition to participating in the regular Mid-Wilts leagues. Dan commented "The wider audience for a Doubles league creates further support for our management committee's hope to enter, what is now a Corsham Doubles C team into division 2. Food for thought to be discussed at our AGM on the 16th. And with Jim McCune stepping down, John Earney was a very popular choice for a new Chairman. I've volunteered to fulfil the Secretary duties but I would encourage all members of the club to get involved - the leagues, tournaments and other opportunities require your help. If you want to know more please come and talk to me."
21 Apr 10: Mid-Wilts American Tournament, Corsham Win Men's Doubles!
This year Corsham's Springfield Leisure Centre hosted the Mid-Wilts American Tournament for Men's doubles, Mixed 4/2 doubles and Ladies doubles. The event was very well supported with 13 Men's pairs, 12 Mixed 4/2 pairs and 4 Ladies pairs. Corsham featured strongly throughout with Mitt and Pete winning group 1 and Colin and DC winning group 3, pipping Steve and Kev into the runners-up position in group 3. Steve and Kev narrowly lost out by 1 point on average score to lose the 4th semi-final place to the young Devizes pair of Hamish and Matthew. Colin and DC beat Mitt and Pete 21-20 to reach the final against Hamish and Matthew who came through their semi-final after beating Tom and James from Marshfield. DC and Colin ran out the Devizes pair to be crowned Men's Doubles Winners! In the Mixed 4/2 doubles, Mitt and Pill were runners-up in their group but due to time pressures the winners of the 2 groups went straight into the final. Thanks to Emma for stepping in to make a last-minute pairing with John Earney. Dan and Anne-Marie Welch were crowned eventual Mixed Doubles Winners in an all-Phoenix final against Gareth and Anya Henbourgh. In the Ladies doubles, Emma and Pill faced strong competition from county players from Freshford/St. Georges and Chippenham 23 and earned every point won and were only 14 points adrift (49) from eventual winners Anne-Marie Welch and Tracey Goult from Phoenix (63) over three games. Well done to all our Corsham pairs: Pill and Emma, Steve and Kev, DC and Colin, Mitt and Pete, Dave and Matt L, Ade and Liam, Antony and Frank, Debbie and Dave, Emma and John and Pill and Mitt.
Adam McKenzie (Chippenham 23) commented "The venue was excellent and the event was well supported which is encouraging to see. Great games and lots of fun had by all who participated!"
Dan added "The American format which calls for handicaps really levelled the field as none of the stronger pairings on scratch came through the group stages but the majority of the games were 18, 19 and 20 proving it is possible! There were one or two oddities - Mitt and Pete beat Roy Ashworth and Gareth Hembourgh (Phoenix) to 4 so no handicap required there! The event also showcased Corsham Badminton Club and helped raise our profile in the community and Mid-Wilts too. Thanks to the Springfield Centre staff for accommodating the late finish and to John Earney and Graham Long from the Mid-Wilts committee for organising the tournament."
Steve said "It was great to see so many Corsham players taking part this year and walking away with trophies. Excellent, the handicaps worked very well and every point had to be earnt. No easy games, well except the 21-4 thrashing Mitt and Pete gave the top Phoenix Men's pair! Utterly bizarre, but a great result nonetheless."
Mitt added "The downside to the event being so well supported was that we ran out of time to play the Mixed semi-finals as originally planned which was a shame as Pill and I came runners-up in our group. Still it was a great game against Colin and DC (lost to 20!) in the Men's doubles and the game against Dave and Matt wasn't bad either. But by the end of the night I was regretting having played the singles tournament on Monday. Was brilliant to see a Corsham pair go on to win!"
